The coldest days of winter are behind us now in southern New Mexico and with longer days and warmer temperatures comes the most precious of times on a ranch &#8230; it’s calving season.  Not to romanticize the whole thing too much – this time of year is also synonymous with long hours often stretching late into the night, many hours in the saddle checking cows and the occasional need for an assisted birth.  Still … I love calves!

Is that possibly an official condition? 
I crave organization, details, plans … yet, my super left-brained self is constantly at odds with this desire, resulting in this sort of reverse-Monet effect.  You know how a Monet painting reveals beautiful detail when viewed from a distance, but when you get up close it’s an unidentifiable mess of color and strokes?  Well, my things appear to be complete chaos when seen from afar but when you lean in closer you will discover a meticulous pattern.

You may remember a few days ago when I introduced you to my lovable, goof of a black lab Miller.  Did I tell you that the boss&#8217; son calls him &#8220;Scuba Steve?&#8221;  Ah, well that&#8217;s another story   

While the bunny and the swelling are gone, Miller did not escape usncathed.

The cowboy&#8217;s been putting a healthy glop of Corona cream on there to speed the healing process along &#8230; mostly because I think he&#8217;s embarrassed to take poor Miller on any truck trips where people might see him.
