The purpose of the mecate rein, with a long slobber strap is to act as the shank of a bit, but by having a longer- heavier slobber strap you give your horse a better pre-signal(by the weight-same thing in the bosal); meaning he has time to get adjusted to what you're asking. I've also learned to ask by doing less and waiting more. I hope that isn't to ambiguous.
